In FY 2006- 2008, the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) implemented democracy assistance projects in about 90 countries. The Dept. of State's Bureau of Democracy, Human Rights and Labor (DRL) and the private, nonprofit National Endowment for Democracy (NED) also fund democracy programs in many of these countries. Partly to lessen the risk of duplicative programs, State recently initiated efforts to reform and consolidate State and USAID foreign assistance processes. This report reviewed: (1) democracy assistance funding provided by USAID, DRL, and NED in FY 2008; (2) USAID, DRL

Democracy is recognized as the primary vehicle for the fulfilment of individual and collective aspirations, the articulation of interests, and the nurturing of civil society. Globalizing forces have underpinned the spread of this message across the globe. Yet the march of democratization is highly contested and politicized and there is little consensus on what democracy is or should be. This volume brings together preeminent scholars from around the world in a collection of essays that point to a changing and broadening agenda of democracy. Themes addressed include challenges to democracy in e

Democracy in Latin America examines democratic transition and consolidation in post-authoritarian and post-civil war Latin America. Its central premise is that the fundamental prerequisite of democracy is the existence of a polity or political society, something that has been weak or under threat. The challenges of reconstructing political societies rests upon a broad definition of democracy as more than electoral systems and institutions. In 1995, the European Union developed a framework for cooperation with the southern Mediterranean nations. In the aftermath of 9/11, the goal of encouraging the development of Middle East democracy has acquired greater urgency, not least in the eyes of the U.S., which has bolstered its own efforts to spur democratic reform. It will be important to assess the effectiveness of other democracy-promotion activities, including those undertaken by European counterparts. This report seek

An analysis of the growth economy, this book traces the causes of the present crisis in the modern market system, initiated two centuries ago with the establishment of the market economy system which has led to the present growth economy. It concludes that a true democracy can only be derived from a synthesis of the democratic and socialist traditions, along with the radical green, feminist and libertarian ideologies. To this end, this text offers a new vision of an inclusive democracy. ContentsAcknowledgements viiIntroduction ix Part I The Crisis of the Growth Economy1The Market Ec
