From the moment it was first proposed, the role of the nursepractitioner has been steeped in controversy. In the fields of bothnursing and medicine, the idea that a nurse practitioner can, to somedegree, serve as a replacement for the physician has sparked heateddebates. Perhaps for that reason, despite the progress of the nursepractitioner movement, NPs have been reluctant to speak aboutthemselves and their work, and their own vision of their role has thusremained largely invisible. Current research is dominated byinstrumental and economic modes of discourse and tends to focus on theclinical

This guide explores the ways that peer-to-peer learning networks of teachers and administrators can overcome many of the challenges traditionally associated with in-service training for education professionals. The publication presents a basic methodology for setting up school clusters and describes some of the exciting dynamics that are created within a cluster: appreciation of individual strengths, friendly competition among teachers and schools, and ownership of their own professional development. As the testimonial at the end of the guide shows, this process can be transformational for a t

Rather than focusing primarily on traditional professional military educ., this analysis examines how educ. has been used as a tool of American power. Four major moments of transformation in the international system are surveyed to illustrate a link between żstrategic educational capacity,ż defined as the application of attained knowledge and skills, and national power. An important educational capacity is emerging in the new Minerva program in the DoD and other transformational educational concepts with security applications. Educ. is gaining an increasing interest among American decisionma

To become a more responsive and dominant combat force, the U.S. Army is changing its strategy from bigger and stronger weapons to faster and more agile ones. The Future Combat Systems (FCS) -- which the Army calls the żgreatest technology and integration challenge ever undertakenż -- is expected to meet the Armyżs transformational objectives. For FCSż first developmental increment, the Army has set aside a 5-1/2-year timetable from program start (May 2003) until the initial production decision (Nov. 2008). This testimony is about FCSż key features, whether the program carries any risks, a

The USAF has a goal to supply 50%t of its fuel requirements from domestic synthetic sources by 2016. This study had 2 objectives. The first was to develop a coal-biomass-to-liquids (CBTL) plant design that is potentially capable of co-gasifying mixtures of coal and biomass to produce a clean synthesis gas that can then be sent to Fischer-Tropsch units for synthesis of clean diesel, jet and naphtha liquid fuels. The second objective was to develop a CBTL pathway for diesel fuel production that has the potential of providing 100,000 BPD of synthetic fuel with the requirement that carbon dioxide
