Marcos Aragao Correia is the Lawyer of the mother of the kidnapped and murdered little Portuguese girl Joana Cipriano, abducted in the Algarve just about 12 miles from where Madeleine McCann was kidnapped. He also worked with the Spanish private detective agency Método 3, which was the main agency contracted by Madeleine’s parents to search for their daughter. Poor diets and rising obesity rates among Americans have persisted despite increased awareness and publicity regarding the benefits of a healthy lifestyle. The model predicts that dietary knowledge will have less influence on food choices in the face of immediate visceral factors. Longer intervals between meals and consumpti

This volume presents the first English-language translation of Synod on the Freedom of Conscience (1582), a book-length plea for religious freedom by Dutch humanist Dirck Vockertszoon Coornhert (1522–90). Coornhert’s central concern in his writings and exchanges with ministers of the Reformed Church was the safeguarding of freedom of conscience—the chief cause, he believed, for the struggle against Hapsburg Spain. The imaginary synod at the center of this text, held in “Freetown,” becomes a space of exchange for Catholic and Protestant leaders and theologians, who

In Western countries conscientious objection is usually accommodated in various ways, at least in certain areas (military conscription, medicine) and to some extent. It appears to be regarded as fundamentally different from other kinds of objection. But why? This study argues that conscientious objection cannot be understood as long as conscience is misunderstood. The author provides a new interpretation of the historical development of expressions of conscience and thought on the subject, and offers a new approach to conscientious objection rooted in the symbol-approach to conscience.
