Use of un-treated/partially treated wastewater for irrigation in the dry countries of Asia and Africa and recycling of treated wastewater in the water scarce developed countries has become a common practice due to various reasons. While the lack of wastewater treatment to appropriate levels before use is a major problem in developing countries, the high cost of wastewater recycling is the major problem in developed countries. The current paper is part of a doctoral research and presents the conceptual framework for the research and the methodology that can be used to tackle the problems associ

With issues of climate change, increase in urban population and the increased demand for water from competing sectors, wastewater recycling is becoming an important strategy to complement the existing water resources for both developing and developed countries. There are lessons, experiences, data and technology that can be shared for mutual benefit. The current paper is part of a doctoral research and presents a comprehensive literature review on the following issues in India and Australia: some key statistics of wastewater use and recycling; rationale for wastewater use; problems in promotin

Farming communities in water-scarce regions increasingly practice the use of urban wastewater in agriculture. Untreated urban wastewater is generally considered unacceptable for direct use because of potential health risks. However, in many parts of the world, poor farmers in peri-urban areas use untreated wastewater. This situation is considered likely to continue even in the foreseeable future due to the high investment cost associated with the installation of treatment facilities.

Untreated wastewater originating in Tijuana, Mexico enters the U.S. via the Tijuana River. Tijuanażs higher elevation results in sewage flowing downhill into Calif. and out to the Pacific Ocean. There are several alternatives to bring the wastewater into Clean Water Act compliance; a fed. court order requires compliance by Sept. 30, 2008. There are two proposals under consideration: (1) upgrading the Wastewater Treatment Plant in San Ysidro, Calif.; or (2) building a new plant in Mexico where wastewater that received primary treatment would be pumped for secondary treatment. This report: (1)

QUOTEWhere, when, and how much to invest in wastewater treatment is a policy decision that presents many challenges and is not properly addressed in most situations worldwide. The most common situations are, unfortunately, those in which no treatment is provided at all...QUOTEThe integration of wastewater management and pollution control interventions and policies within the broader water resources management policy are essential for achieving the efficient use of the scarce resource available. With that in mind, this paper has three objectives:* Emphasize the need for systematic evaluation of

Communities will need hundreds of billions of dollars in coming years to construct and upgrade wastewater infrastructure. Policymakers have proposed a variety of approaches to finance this infrastructure, incl. the creation of a national infrastructure bank (NIB) and the increased use of privately financed public-private partnerships (PPP). In this context, this report identified: (1) Stakeholder views on issues to be considered in the design of an NIB; and (2) the extent to which private financing has been used in wastewater PPPs and its reported advantages and challenges. In conducting this

Analysis of water and wastewater is becoming increasingly important and necessary to examine the quality of water and wastewater. This is also an important tool to conduct treatability studies of wastewater and to assess ill effects and health effects. This book incorporates significant involvements in methodology and techniques for the examination of different type of water and wastewater. The book deals in details with sampling, physical analysis, chemical analysis, instrumental analysis, pesticide analysis, organics and floatable analysis, treatibility studies and statistical analysis of th
